Many of us recognize the gender biases in our everyday life—they involve holding stereotypical beliefs, attitudes, and expectations about the capabilities, roles, and characteristics of men and women, which often result in unequal treatment and opportunities.
The UN report, 2023 Gender Social Norms Index (GSNI), which draws on a comprehensive global survey, shows the impact of gender bias across the globe. One of the most alarming findings is that approximately 9 out of 10 people harbor biases against women. This statistic highlights the extent to which gender discrimination remains deeply entrenched in societies, impeding progress towards gender equality.
“The index, covering 85 percent of the global population, reveals that close to 9 out of 10 men and women hold fundamental biases against women. Nearly half the world’s people believe that men make better political leaders than women do, and two of five people believe that men make better business executives than women do.”

When deeply rooted gender stereotypes persist, they hinder women’s empowerment, limit their opportunities for advancement, and perpetuate social and economic inequalities. These biases not only undermine the potential of individual women but also hinder societal progress as a whole.
The UN report emphasizes that tackling gender bias is not solely a matter of human rights but is crucial for achieving sustainable development. When women are granted equal rights and opportunities, they can contribute more fully to their communities, economies, and societies.
Addressing gender bias requires a multi-faceted approach that includes education, awareness campaigns, policy changes, and fostering inclusive workplaces. Education plays a critical role in challenging gender stereotypes and fostering a more inclusive mindset from an early age.
By taking collective action and fostering a more inclusive and equitable society, we can create a world where gender bias is but a relic of the past. Let us strive for a future where every person, regardless of their gender, can thrive and reach their full potential.
What are some ways you can work to combat gender bias in your community and workplace?
