I’ve been seeing more research on the benefits of having an age-diverse workforce. Does this really foster innovation? How can I work to hire and retain older workers?
— Chris N.
For any innovation to happen there needs to be diversity: in age, gender, ethnicity, and even culturally. This provides insight from all different backgrounds and skill sets. It’s also beneficial for knowledge-sharing, for mature workers in particular.
When you look at the list of top qualities in an employee—like leadership, problem-solving, innovation, and emotional intelligence—these are all qualities mature workers exemplify. They have experience! This is not to say that they do not learn from and value their younger counterparts. Across all generations this type of collaboration is a win-win-win and is the bedrock of our future together.
How should you hire and retain mature workers? The first step is to actually hire them! Retention, for any age, is now really about workplace culture, flexible work environments, and fair compensation.
The future of work is age-diverse!
