Halloween is approaching and I would like to add dressing up as the elderly to the list of costumes that should be avoided (along with culturally appropriative and other offensive costumes of the past). I saw a Today article about how dressing as an older person is a form of casual ageism. What are your thoughts on this?

I saw that article as well! Here is the link for anyone that missed it: Why Parents Should Reconsider Letting Their Kids Dress Up as “Old” For Halloween.
There’s a reason why sexist, ageist, and racist jokes or costumes feel wrong. Hint: it’s because they are and they lead to larger societal repercussions. This type of casual ageism can lead to “othering” older individuals, which ultimately causes a general apathy toward the elderly, and further, circumstances of elder abuse.
The more you play lightly with any form of othering, the more you perpetuate a societal disconnect with that group. Any form of ageism, ableism, or any of the other -isms, even if it seems silly or light-hearted, is not acceptable.
It’s essential that we consider our fellow humans this Halloween and in everyday life. A simple joke can lead to actual harm being done.
Be safe this Halloween, eat your treats, but be mindful of your tricks!
