I just turned 40! Growing up I heard the label “midlife crisis” tagged onto any risky or bold decision someone over 40 made. If anything I feel more courageous than at any point in my life before! Are big life changes in your 40s and beyond truly caused by an existential crisis, or am I finally reaching a more confident phase?

Midlife is and has always been the on-ramp to the end goal we all should be aiming for: a long life well lived by adding value all the way until our end point. Isn’t that the whole point of life to accumulate as many years as we can all the way until the end?
There’s great importance of the midlife passage! Of course you’re feeling more confident and courageous. There’s going to be amazing successes during this time, as well as periods of inner reflection and re-evaluation. The ebb and flow of life is constant, but we learn to steer for smoother passage along the way.
We need to all ask “What will we all do with all these extra years?” Heading towards my last decades at age 78+ I relish adding candles to my cake…and eating it too!
